This September, the most knowledgeable spectators at the 2010 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships will also be the youngest. Since last spring, over 15,000 students have discovered the sport of wheelchair rugby through the Wheelchair Rugby Schools Program, learning the rules of the game and taking part in demos conducted by members of the provincial and national team. During the 2010WWRC, 10,000 of these students will pack the stands to see the sport firsthand and cheer the athletes on to victory.
Participants in the Wheelchair Rugby Schools Program learn more than just the x’s and o’s o the game. By exploring disability through sport, students focus on what people with disabilities can do and learn the importance of being physically active. The Wheelchair Rugby Schools Program will continue as a legacy of the 2010WWRC, ensuring that students will become aware of accessibility and equality issues long after the medals have been awarded.
What Does the Wheelchair Rugby Schools Program Offer?
The Wheelchair Rugby Schools Program is suitable for students in elementary and middle school. Teachers receive a Teacher’s Resource Manual with 13 lesson plans that allow students to practice grade-appropriate math, reading, writing and problem-solving skills while learning about spinal-cord injuries, disabled sports and the 2010 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships. All lesson plans come with handouts and other resources.
To see a sample lesson plan or obtain a list of all lesson plans, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Schools can also choose to take part in the wheelchair rugby demo program. Members of the provincial and national wheelchair rugby teams will come to your school to tell their stories, demonstrate the sport and help both students and teachers try rugby wheelchairs.
Many schools taking part in the program will also come to the 2010WWRC. We have room for 10,000 students, but tickets are going fast. Tickets are $2 per child. To book your tickets, please contact email@example.com
